"Affenskulptur" 2007
Jörg Immendorff
bronze, 5,2 m x 3,7 m x 2,6 m
The sculpture by Jörg Immendorff, installed at the square outside the railway station, consists of five monkey sculptures, which playfully fight with each other. In overall view the sculpture has a self-contained form.
Immendorff consistently uses monkeys as a reference for his artwork. In different sizes and forms, in his sculptures as well as in his paintings, monkeys appear again and again. The monkey is an image for self-mockery, clownery and the task of an artist in society. Furthermore one can see a stump with a hat lying on there. Immendorff refers to Joseph Boys, who was his teacher and who was very much adored by Immendorff.
