The Nielsen fountain was erected in 1872 and was meant to embellish the Contrescarpe. The name is based on the merchant Ferdinand Nielsen, who was one of the sponsors and organisers. The stone basin with a fountain pipe was decorated with figurative ornaments made from bronze: dolphin waterspouts and four girls with flower wreaths and garlands in their hands.
The fountain was demolished in 1931.
